Why ClearGifting exists
The question "How much should I give?" is often more stressful than choosing the gift itself. Whether it is a wedding, a baptism, a baby shower, a housewarming, a graduation, an anniversary, a farewell, Christmas, or a milestone birthday, the amount that feels right depends on more than a single etiquette rule. Local norms, the size of the celebration, travel costs, and your relationship to the hosts all pull in different directions.
After facing that dilemma myself and spending too long hunting for a "correct" number online, I wanted a clearer approach. ClearGifting is a set of interactive calculators that turn a few practical details into a realistic gift range, so you can decide with less second-guessing and more confidence.
Who this is for
ClearGifting is for anyone who has stared at an invitation and felt unsure what a thoughtful gift should cost. That includes wedding guests balancing hotels and flights, friends invited to a baby shower or baptism, colleagues collecting for a farewell, families planning Christmas or birthday budgets across several people, and hosts who simply want a calm reference point before a group chat turns into a negotiation.
You do not need to be an etiquette expert. The tools are built for everyday decisions: close family versus acquaintance, formal reception versus casual gathering, local guest versus long-distance travel, solo attendance versus a plus-one, and individual gifts versus shared collections. If you want an amount that feels appropriate without overspending or under-giving out of guesswork, this is who we built the site for.
How the calculators work
Each calculator starts from market-specific norms for that occasion, then adjusts based on the details you provide. Typical inputs include your relationship to the hosts or recipient, the scale and style of the celebration, whether you are attending with a plus-one, travel effort, and whether you are joining a group gift. The output is a suggested range in local currency, not a single forced number. Think of it as a budgeting corridor you can place next to the rest of your month: outfits, lodging, and other costs that already come with celebrating.
Closer relationships and larger celebrations usually move the range upward. Lighter connections or modest formats keep it more restrained. Group gifts change the per-person share. Special factors only apply when they match your situation. Nothing in the form is designed to push you past what you can afford. The goal is a clear starting point you can stand behind, then refine based on what you know about the people involved.
Markets we cover, and why localization matters
ClearGifting currently supports the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Each market has its own currency, guest customs, and comfort zones around cash gifts versus physical presents. A wedding guest in New York thinks in dollars. A guest in London thinks in pounds. Guests in Berlin, Vienna, or Zurich work in euros or Swiss francs, often with different expectations around envelopes, group collections, and formality. Copying one country's average onto another creates awkward advice, so we maintain separate constants, currencies, and language for each live market.
Localization is more than translation. It means showing amounts with the right currency symbol, reflecting regional etiquette patterns, and writing guidance that sounds natural in American English, British English, and the German variants used in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Expectations still vary between cities and smaller towns. When they do, we treat the calculator result as a grounded starting point rather than a rigid rule.
Guidance, not rules
Gift etiquette is social, not mathematical. Our approach is transparency: we combine publicly framed etiquette patterns with the factors you choose, then show a range you can interpret. We do not claim there is one correct amount for every guest. We do not invent social pressure, and we do not use your answers to build a profile of your income. The calculators are planning aids. If money is tight, the lower bound is often still a socially careful place to land. If the relationship is especially close, the upper bound is a useful ceiling, not a target to exceed.
That idea sits behind our broader mission as well: clarity in celebration, and intentionality over obligation. Gift-giving should strengthen relationships, not strain them. Thoughtfulness matters more than matching someone else's spend. ClearGifting exists to reduce the anxiety around "how much," so you can focus on showing up with confidence and care.
